Choco-la-te!

By: Ashlley Vela, Spanish Teacher
In our fifth grade Spanish class, students explored the origin of chocolate in Aztec culture, with Mexico as our featured country. The core vocabulary, including "Es (is), le gusta (likes), prefiere (prefers), and dice (says)," provided the foundation for our learning journey.
In the class, students actively engaged in activities, building connections within the classroom and beyond. The unit allowed students to compare their personal preferences with their peers, facilitating thoughtful reflections on cultural differences and similarities.

One highlight was introducing a rhythmic hand clapping song "Chocolate," adding a dynamic and interactive element to the lessons. Students were thrilled to learn an authentic rhyme in Spanish! We learned about the cultural importance of chocolate to the Aztecs in ancient Mexico. This provided students with a broader understanding of history and traditions. The communicative activities we did in class helped students improve their language skills and fostered a sense of community within the classroom.

Our fifth grade Spanish class is a vibrant blend of fun, stories, music, and games. Exploring language and culture becomes a shared adventure, nurturing a love for learning and an appreciation for the rich diversity in our world!

See how Spanish and the entire K-8 curriculum engages students with challenging and joyful learning.
