Volleyball and Cross Country Off to Strong Starts

Live Oak's volleyball and cross country teams are just getting underway with another competitive season. Read some of the results for both teams from this past week! 
Busy Week of Volleyball Action
Live Oak’s Sixth Grade JV White team kept it close in the first set with some nice serving from Arhan, Kaylin and Jude. The Lightning worked hard throughout, but KIPP Bayview found their groove serving in the second set to take the match 25-18, 25-14. The JV White also played a scrimmage against The San Francisco School this past Wednesday. The Lightning varsity squad split its two contests this week, earning a 25-11, 25-21 win over Burke’s on Tuesday before losing a tough three-set match to The San Francisco School on Wednesday, 20-25, 25-18, 15-13. Finally, the Seventh Grade JV Green team tallied a 25-16, 25-18 victory over Burke’s in their first match of the year on Wednesday. Live Oak’s two sixth grade JV teams and the Seventh Grade JV Green scrimmaged each other on Thursday afternoon at UCSF Mission Bay, while both seventh grade JV squads will return to action with matches against CAIS next Wednesday.  
 

Cross Country Opens Season on the Right Foot
The Lightning cross country runners turned in some impressive individual and team performances in their first meet this past Friday at Hellman Hollow. Emma L. cruised to a first place finish in the 7/8 Girls Division, crossing the line at 9:28.9, while Lily F. (9:46.0) had the third place time and Ailey S. (9:57.4) finished in seventh. The Lightning finished in second place, just one point behind Burke’s as a team. On the 7/8 Boys side, Nate S. earned a top finish of his own with his time of 8:26.2. Coleman P. (9:10.0) came in fourth place to round out Live Oak’s top-10 finishers. As a team, the Lightning finished in third place among the five competing squads. The 5/6 Girls Division saw Sierra P. finish in second place with a time of 10:07.0 as Live Oak earned a third place finish overall. Finally, the 5/6 Boys Division featured top-10 finishes from Keiran S. (4th place / 10:12.7), Jackson A. (7th place / 10:29.1), and Hamilton P. (8th place / 10:29.3), with the Lightning ending up in second place in the team standings behind CDS. The team will prepare for their next meet this coming Tuesday, October 1 at McLaren Park.
