Storytelling and Bookmaking at 826 Valencia

By: Lesley Miyagawa and Rebecca Mallabone, 3 East Teachers
This month 3 East students visited 826 Valencia to learn more about the craft of writing and published their own book: Don’t Delete Us. The field trip was an excellent opportunity for our students to explore creative writing, work collaboratively, and grow their confidence in the writing process. While at 826 Valencia, students were supported by writing coaches, a ghost writer, illustrator, and four courageous parent chaperones.
Out Of the Box Thinking!
3 East students developed their imagination and critical thinking skills as they worked together to plan and draft a new story. They came up with an original story with a unique setting, plot, characters, and cliffhanger. The story Don’t Delete Us is set inside a computer and tells the story of Cookie Dude–a mouse–and their trusty sidekick, Capyola the capybara who are both trapped inside the computer. Little do they know that more peril and trouble awaits them as the villain, a tiger named Bob and his loyal minion Pickle Pencil Sloth are lurking in the spam folder waiting to delete innocent Cookie Dude and Capyola and wipe their memory from all existence….duh duh duhhhhhhh. Students worked on individual endings to this cliffhanger moment, deciding whether to make the trouble worse or save Cookie Dude and Capyola. Come and see their published book on display in the Live Oak Library!

What’s Next?
Third graders have returned to the classroom ready to dive into their next creative writing unit: Fairy Tales. We can’t wait to see the original characters, settings, and storylines our newly published authors will write next!
