Week of Service School Happenings

Renata Martin, Changemaker Program Coordinator
This week is Live Oak's annual Week of Service. Over the course of the week we’ll be hearing from different changemakers, classes will be working on projects both on and off campus, students will be learning more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other changemakers both present and past, and we will close the week with a whole-school sing-along of traditional civil rights and social justice songs. Read more below to see how the various grade levels will be engaging in Week of Service this year.
Tuesday, January 20: The middle schoolers and kindergartners will hear from Bronwyn Peterson who runs the Intergenerational Program at Sequoia — an organization with whom we are partnering this year — about the importance of intergenerational relationships.

Wednesday, January 21: Tina Bhatnagar, president of the West Coast chapter of EduGirls (and mother to our very own Akira ‘28!), will be presenting to our middle school, second, and third grade students about her work with girls’ education in India.

Thursday, January 22: Edward Hatter, executive director of the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House (“the Nabe”), will be speaking with our 4th - 8th graders about his work at the Nabe and his generations-deep connection to fighting for social justice in the city.

Friday, January 23: The whole school will come together in the morning in the Grand Hall to sing songs of freedom, resistance, peace, and justice.

Also throughout the week in their own classes, students across all grade levels will engage in meaningful community service, social justice learning, and environmental stewardship activities.

Kindergartners will observe the neighborhood around school to identify areas where they can make a positive impact, and then create and hang posters throughout the neighborhood to encourage community stewardship of our shared outdoor spaces.

First graders will partner with their seventh-grade buddies to perform Random Acts of Kindness, while second graders will assemble hygiene kits for Glide that middle school students will deliver during their upcoming volunteer shifts.

Third, fourth, and sixth graders will participate in Random Acts of Kindness activities throughout the week. Fourth graders will also continue their relationship with Heron’s Head to do habitat restoration work, and will be kicking off their Adopt-a-Drain initiative, while fifth graders will explore environmental impact and personal responsibility while learning more about Martin Luther King Jr.

In addition to their Random Acts of Kindness, sixth graders will be launching their neighborhood Adopt-a-Drain project as part of science class, and will close out the week with a park cleanup at Crane Cove on Friday afternoon.

Finally, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will have opportunities to go deeper with our guest speakers in their classes, connecting the presenters' work to their ongoing learning.
